Shredding Facts

Identity theft is causing a widespread financial plague across America.  Sensitive material, with credit card information, is stolen so frequently because it is not properly disposed off.  Shredding services are a great way to eliminate the amount of fraudulent identity theft problems. By using a Shredding service, sensitive documents, names, addresses, social security numbers, and banking information are all safeguarded.  Below are some common facts regarding paper shredding that will help to encourage proper disposal, in order to save your finances and identity.

The first paper shredder was convinced by a man name Abbot Augustus Low. Low lived in Pierce Field NY, and wanted to conceive a device for a more compact method of disposing unwanted paper.  His device was known as the waste paper receptacle, but it was never actually manufactured.  Alber Ehinger used low’s idea of the receptacle to construct the world’s first paper shredder in 1935.   It was rumored that the shredder disposed of propaganda.

When did it become required to shred documents?

It wasn’t until the mid 1980s that shredding became a mandated law.  The case of California v. Greenwood determined that the Fourth Amendment does not protect against theft from garbage or trash. Essentially, this meant that the state could not persecute anyone who took material from the garbage. Search and seizure was also not applicable to those who took material from any refuse bin. This new ruling posed a great deal of concern for companies throwing away credit card and social security information.  By shredding paper, thieves are unable to steal any sort of information. The paper is shredded in a fashion that is impossible to ever piece back together.

After the government ruling,  non-governmentally based shredding companies arose to protect those with a large amount of sensitive material. Now it is common to find shredders in all types of places, whether it is an office space, home, or even a recreational facility.

How Many People Get there Identities Stolen due to improper document disposal?

The United States Trade Commission projects that  over 9 million people are victims of identify theft per year.  It is highly recommend to shred all excess copies of birth certificates, death certificates, military records, credit card information, social security numbers, financial states, and additional copies of wills, but you should never shred the original copies of the aforementioned items.
It is highly important to manage all sensitive material by hiring a shredding service. If the documents end up in the wrong hands, you can experience severe financial woes.

Westchester Companies who need Document Shredding should call USA SHRED. Even if you have one box we have a shredding solution for you.

Businesses such as law firms, accounting offices, financial institutions, hospitals and many others oftentimes have highly sensitive personal and/or financial information included in files that are regularly scheduled for shredding. It’s critically important for just about every business manager to know exactly ‘who’ is operating the shredder.
